Chords Lesson 9
G Triad Inversions on Strings 2 3 4 (Major and Minor)
The G Major chord or triad is made up of a G, B and D
These would the the 1st, 3rd and 5th degree of a G Major Scale.

Root position G chord or triad would be spelled: G B D
1st inversion would have us move the G up one octave from the bottom to the top: B D G
2nd inversion would have us move the B up one octave from the bottom to the top: D G B
G (root)

G (1st Inversion)

G (2nd Inversion)

Gm (root)

Gm (1st Inversion)

Gm (2nd Inversion)

G (root)

Gm (root)

These exercises below have us playing through the inversions of the G major triad.
The open strings 2 3 and 4 just so happen to be a 2nd inversion G chord so we are going to start with these 3 open strings and then alternate between the fretted inversions and the 2nd inversion open string triad.
The first exercise below has us down pick the 3 open strings starting with your 4th string (D). Once you have down picked the 3 open strings you will position your left hand into the root position G shape and up pick strings 2 3 4. Then back to down picking the 3 open strings. So on and so forth through the inversions.

This next exercise has us playing almost the same thing however we will start with the 2nd string and up pick the open triad and then down pick the root position G triad.
