D Major scale on D string
Let's build our D major scale on our D string!
Use the major scale formula:
W W H W W W H
- Start on open D
- Whole step to E on 2nd fret
- Whole step to F# on 4th fret
- Half step to G
- Whole step to A
- Whole step to B
- Whole step to C#
- Half step to D

Key Signature
The staff to the right shows a key signature with an F# (top line) and a C# (3rd space). Because there is a key signature the sharps do not need to be in front of the notes on the staff. We just know any time we see any F regardless of octave, we play F# and any time we see C, we play C#. This makes it easier then sharp (or flats) being all over the written music cluttering up the page.
Also note that two sharps also represent the key of B minor.
