Arpeggio Lesson 10
D Minor Arpeggio in 5th Position
D minor arpeggio in 5th position
We first looked at a D minor arpeggio in Arpeggio Lesson 7 in 2nd position and we learned the notes of a Dm chord were:
D F A
Start first by playing it up and down starting on the D (5th fret of your A string) and then try starting on the low A.
Dm

2nd Inversion
If we start on the A and play just the 3 notes we are playing a D minor arpeggio in 2nd inversion.
Root: D F A
1st Inversion: F A D
2nd Inversion: A D F
These are explored much more thoroughly in the chord series.

Shifting Positions
Now let us move this 2nd inversion D minor arpeggio to strings 4 and 3. It will look the same however it will start in 7th position and be 1 octave higher.
From there we will move to strings 2 and 1 and 10th position to give us yet another octave higher. And now would be two octaves higher from where we started.
10th Position
This form was introduced in Arpeggio Lesson 8 with an A minor arpeggio. Notice that the arpeggio form from above that we shifted from 5th to 7th to 10th, takes us right into this other form.
Practice Tip: play up and down the 5th position form and then shift through the positions using the 2nd inversion arpeggio and then up and down the 10th position form. Then go back down.

Saying the note names while you practice the arpeggio is highly recommended. Trying to sing the pitches with the letter names would be even better. Although good luck singing those high notes 🙂
Practice Tip
Play up and down the 5th position form and then shift through the positions using the 2nd inversion arpeggio and then up and down the 10th position form. Then go back down.

Here is the Dm bar chord in 10th position. It is a good idea to connect the arpeggio with the chord. In other words, play the chord and then play the arpeggio.
