Scale Lesson 17

Bb Major in 5th Position

This is part of Lesson 17.

We build a Bb major scale by using the major scale formula:

W W H W W W H

We get:

Bb C D Eb F G A Bb

Therefore the key of Bb has two flats and those flats are Bb and Eb.

Bb majors relative minor is G minor.

This means the key of G minor also has two flats and those are also Bb and Eb.

Extended - the same scale as above however the low A is added on your low E string and the high C on your high E string.

Bb Major - play from Bb to Bb
G Minor - play from G to G

Some other modes we looked at in earlier lessons:

C Dorian - play from C to C
D Phrygian - play from D to D
Eb Lydian - play from Eb to Eb
F Mixolydian - play from F to F
G Aeolian - play from G to G (notice this is G Minor)
A Locrian - play from A to A

Pentatonic - removing the 4th and 7th degree from the Bb major scale leaves us with a Bb major pentatonic scale.  Also called G minor pentatonic.

Bb major pentatonic:  Bb  C  D  F  G

G minor pentatonic:  G  Bb  C  D  F
