G Major and Gmaj7 in 2nd Position

In this lesson we will learn how to play a G major arpeggio and a Gmaj7 arpeggio in 2nd position.

Shifting using G Major Triad

In Lesson 9 we looked at moving the G major arpeggio from 2nd position to 4th to 7th.

This form first showed up as a D major arpeggio in Arpeggio Lesson 6 and then again in 7th position for a G major in Arpeggio Lesson 9

We see the same form in Arpeggio Lesson 13 with a 2nd position Dmaj7 arpeggio.

Shifting using Gmaj7

Now let's take the same exercise from above where we moved the G major arpeggio from 2nd to 4th to 7th but this time let's add the F# to make it a Gmaj7th arpeggio.

Shift the same way but now play the 4 notes of the Gmaj7th arpeggio starting with F#. Play the 4 notes in 2nd position on strings 6 and 5 and then shift to 4th position and play the same 4 notes (1 octave higher) on strings 4 and 3.

Then shift again to 7th position to play the same 4 notes again (another octave higher).

Practice playing both up and down this pattern.

Exercise

This exercise has us playing a Gmaj7 arpeggio starting on the major 7th (F#). We will just play up the arpeggio with sixteenth notes and since there are 4 sixteenth notes in a beat and 4 notes in our arpeggio, we will just repeat this pattern on each beat.

In another lesson we will look at going up and back down.

Next let us try using the same arpeggio and pick it the same way but this time we are playing eighth note triplets which mean 3 evenly spaced notes in each beat.

Notice that when we get to the last note of the arpeggio (D) it is on beat 2. So even though we will pick this the exact same way, it has quite a different feel.
