Arpeggio Lesson 19

Dm and Dm7 in 7th Position and a 2 String Arpeggio Shifting Exercise

Dm and Dm7 in 7th Position

The notes of a Dm triad are:  D  F  A  (Review Arpeggio Lesson 7)

The notes of a Dm7 chord are:  D F A C

Dm7 is also written as Dminor7, Dmin7, D-7

Dm7 in 5th Position

We learned a Dm arpeggio in 5th position in Arpeggio Lesson 10

We add the 'C' and we have a Dm7 arpeggio.

5th Position

The fretboard shows the 4 notes of a Dm7 arpeggio (the chord played in this order from low to high would be called a 2 inversion Dm7 chord):   A  C  D   F

Of course we can play these 4 notes in any order or pattern we like and I encourage you to do that, however for now we will just play the 4 notes from low to high.

Ideally you would work on alternate picking however you could down pick it all to make it easier to focus on your fretboard and fret hand.

Shifting

Next let's move this same shape up one octave and into 7th position on strings 4 and 3.

When you first start working on the shift, just play the arpeggio on the low two strings and stop on the A one octave higher.  In other words you are just working on trying to get your index finger to that 5th fret of the 4 string.  This will all be explained in a video that will be added to this page.

Exercise Using Dm7 and Shifting

Review - Dm Chord and Arpeggio in 10th Position

We first learned this form using an Am arpeggio in Arpeggio Lesson 8 and then transposed it up a 4th to Dm in Arpeggio Lesson 10.

It is a good idea to try and connect your arpeggio shapes with the chord shape in the same position.  So when practicing you may want to play the chord and then the arpeggio.

How to Use Jam Track

This jam track is a 2 measure  progression that goes from one measure of Dm to one measure of Am.   You can play the Dm7 arpeggio throughout the progression however it is fun to switch to an Am arpeggio too.
