What is a scale?
A scale is a series of notes in a specific order.

Because we have two E strings (a high and a low) we can also play this same exercise on our first string (high E).

Are they important?
You could play guitar your entire life and never learn a scale however to truly understand music theory and your guitar fretboard, well yes they are quite important.
They will be used to create melodies, improvise, build chords, understand keys and what it means to play in a key.
They will improve your technique plus train your ear.
