Scale Lesson 6

D Major Scale on One String and 2nd Position

Before we learn the D major scale in 2nd position, let's review how to build a major scale and build a D major scale on the D string.

Building a scale on one string is a great way to learn the fretboard and make more sense of the theory behind scales and the relationship between half and whole steps.

If you remember from Lesson 2, all major scales are built with one formula and that formula is:

W  W  H  W  W  W  H

So if we start on D and follow this formula, we end up with a D major scale with 2 sharps (F# and C#)

D  E  F#  G  A  B  C#  D

This is actually the same form as your C major scale in open that you learned in lesson 2.  It does look and feel a little different because there are no open strings.  However, it is the same form.
