Hi, my name is Teague Purtell and first up I want to thank you for taking the time to consider becoming a member.  I started Musiclearning.Com in 1999 as a way to provide support for the students I saw in person each week.  Since then it has become a complete step by step guitar method designed to provide direction, focus and get results! 

And most importantly, have lots of fun!  From 20 plus years of teaching I know that students learn better, have more fun and progress faster when songs are at the core of the method.

What is inside?

With over 200 videos and almost 100 songs with beat by beat mp3's to play along with you will learn lots of songs.  However, the method is much more than just songs.  Inside you will find 24 main lessons full of material to make learning those songs easier, faster and sound better.  Material like:

All the songs and riffs chosen for the site work with the overall members method.  Each chosen for a very specific reason.  Whether it be for a strum pattern that was recently introduced or a certain technique that will better your playing, you can be sure they are there for a reason and will help you overall as a player.

Sometimes the style may not be something you would pick to play, but keep an open mind because you may find music that you don't necessarily like to listen to, can be very fun to play.

And more importantly the riffs and breakdowns will make you a stronger player all around.  And that is the goal - Give you the skills necessary to be able to play anything you want.  Any song, any style.

And  remember again that you may see artists on that list that you have no interest in, however you may be surprised at how fun some of those riffs and songs can be to play.

If I could use one example:  Selena Gomez - It Ain't Me

For some you may not even know who she is, for others you might think she is just some pop artist writing pop songs you have no interest in.  But let me say this, the riff in this song is awesome.  Fun to play and clever.  And has a technique that can be used all over the place.  So it is worth every minute you spend on it.

So the key is, open mind......and watch yourself become an amazing guitarist!

Regardless of what level of playing you are at, complete beginner or seasoned player, it is often difficult finding songs at the right level.  At that sweet spot.  Challenging but not so challenging that you want to toss your guitar out the window!

A lot of thought and experience teaching these riffs and songs has allowed me to create an order that will guarantee success.   Between the material in the main lessons, the beat by beat breakdowns and the mp3 to play along with, you will be amazed at what happens to your playing.  I want you to succeed with each new song or riff and if for any reason you are having trouble with anything on the site, you can just drop me a note and I will do whatever is necessary to ensure you can reach your goals.  Play the songs you want and play them well.

And really, like most things in life, we need to feel we are improving.  That is where the excitement and fun is.  Knowing that every single time we pick it up, we are going to learn something new and succeed at it.  It makes the possibilities almost endless.  Just how good can I get?  I can tell you from years of teaching, you can get as good as you want.  You just need to know how.

The importance of the beat by beat breakdown cannot be over stated.  It is the single most important thing you can do to learn songs and riffs properly and make the most of your practice time.  Whether talking about a song or riff, by breaking things down you can absorb the material in a way that is just not possible with any other practice method.

It is the way professionals practice.  And I can tell you from my own personal experience having learned 100's of songs for various gigs, it is the single most important thing you can do to learn things well and fast.

That being said, people quite often think breaking things down so small will take so much longer to learn but it is actually the opposite.  Although I can see how it does appear at first that it would take longer, it couldn't be further from the truth.

The truth is when you break things down, you are able to play them faster and properly.  This creates momentum.  Positive feelings lead to better practice.  You are also working on muscle memory and focus.

There is no better way to learn songs fast then to play along with someone who knows the song.  Better yet,  play along with a professional, play along with me 🙂 All the play along mp3's on the site were made by me, so every time you pick up your guitar and log in, you can start jamming right along with me.  Private lessons generally only provide that once a week, you will be able to any day, any hour.  You decide the time and the pace.

Since the beginning of the site I have been able to test everything with the students I see in person each week.  That and careful consideration to the speed and how many times it repeats and whether I put space in between repeats for rests, ensures you will succeed.  You will learn how to practice with focus and make fast progress.  Which of course makes us excited to keep learning new things.

I am able to test all this with students in person, to be able to decide whether repeating a riff becomes to confusing and time is needed between each pass.  But also making sure not too much time passes and the focus is lost.  Sometimes even just the difference between 2 beats of rest versus 4 beats of rest can make all the difference to how quickly students can absorb the information and get the riff under their fingers.

The rests in between are meant to allow the brain a chance to absorb the material.
