Or are you a beginner and stuck in that "information overload" place not knowing where to start?

Hi, my name is Teague Purtell and first up I want to thank you for taking the time to consider becoming a member.  I started Musiclearning.Com in 1999 as a way to provide support for the students I saw in person each week.  Since then it has become a complete step by step guitar method designed to provide direction, focus and get results!

What is inside?

With over 200 videos and almost 100 songs with beat by beat mp3's to play along with you will learn lots of songs.  However, the method is much more than just songs.  Inside you will find 24 main lessons full of material to make learning those songs easier, faster and sound better.  Material like:

  •  Theory - This will make it easier to communicate with others

You Will Learn Songs and Riffs
Fast and Well

All the songs and riffs chosen for the site work with the overall members method.  Each chosen for a very specific reason.  Whether it be for a strum pattern that was recently introduced or a certain technique that will better your playing, you can be sure they are there for a reason and will help you overall as a player.

Sometimes the style may not be something you would pick to play, but keep an open mind because you may find music that you don't necessarily like to listen to, can be very fun to play.

And more importantly the riffs and breakdowns will make you a stronger player all around.  And that is the goal - Give you the skills necessary to be able to play anything you want.  Any song, any style.

Learn songs and riffs by artists like:

The Beatles, Coldplay, Metallica, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jason Mraz, Passenger, Blink 182, Greenday, John Mayer, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lit, Justin Beiber, Guns n Roses, AC/DC, Cat Stevens, One Republic, Linkin Park, Led Zeppelin, Bryan Adams, Megadeth, Shawn Mendez, Selena Gomez, Jack Johnson, Neil Young, Rage Against the Machine, Seether, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Taylor Swift, DNCE, Calvin Harris, The Eagles, Pantera and more.

And  remember again that you may see artists on that list that you have no interest in, however you may be surprised at how fun some of those riffs and songs can be to play.

If I could use one example:  Selena Gomez - It Ain't Me

For some you may not even know who she is, for others you might think she is just some pop artist writing pop songs you have no interest in.  But let me say this, the riff in this song is awesome.  Fun to play and clever.  And has a technique that can be used all over the place.  So it is worth every minute you spend on it.

So the key is, open mind......and watch yourself become an amazing guitarist!

Not Sure What Song to Play at Your Current Level?

Regardless of what level of playing you are at, complete beginner or seasoned player, it is often difficult finding songs at the right level.  At that sweet spot.  Challenging but not so challenging that you want to toss your guitar out the window!

A lot of thought and experience teaching these riffs and songs has allowed me to create an order that will guarantee success.   Between the material in the main lessons, the beat by beat breakdowns and the mp3 to play along with, you will be amazed at what happens to your playing.  I want you to succeed with each new song or riff and if for any reason you are having trouble with anything on the site, you can just drop me a note and I will do whatever is necessary to ensure you can reach your goals.  Play the songs you want and play them well.

And really, like most things in life, we need to feel we are improving.  That is where the excitement and fun is.  Knowing that every single time we pick it up, we are going to learn something new and succeed at it.  It makes the possibilities almost endless.  Just how good can I get?  I can tell you from years of teaching, you can get as good as you want.  You just need to know how.

Learn Songs Well

The importance of the beat by beat breakdown cannot be over stated.  It is the single most important thing you can do to learn songs and riffs properly and make the most of your practice time.  Whether talking about a song or riff, by breaking things down you can absorb the material in a way that is just not possible with any other practice method.

It is the way professionals practice.  And I can tell you from my own personal experience having learned 100's of songs for various gigs, it is the single most important thing you can do to learn things well and fast.

That being said, people quite often think breaking things down so small will take so much longer to learn but it is actually the opposite.  Although I can see how it does appear at first that it would take longer, it couldn't be further from the truth.

The truth is when you break things down, you are able to play them faster and properly.  This creates momentum.  Positive feelings lead to better practice.  You are also working on muscle memory and focus.

Learn Songs Fast

There is no better way to learn songs fast then to play along with someone who knows the song.  Better yet,  play along with a professional, play along with me 🙂 All the play along mp3's on the site were made by me, so every time you pick up your guitar and log in, you can start jamming right along with me.  Private lessons generally only provide that once a week, you will be able to any day, any hour.  You decide the time and the pace.

Since the beginning of the site I have been able to test everything with the students I see in person each week.  That and careful consideration to the speed and how many times it repeats and whether I put space in between repeats for rests, ensures you will succeed.  You will learn how to practice with focus and make fast progress.  Which of course makes us excited to keep learning new things.

I am able to test all this with students in person, to be able to decide whether repeating a riff becomes to confusing and time is needed between each pass.  But also making sure not too much time passes and the focus is lost.  Sometimes even just the difference between 2 beats of rest versus 4 beats of rest can make all the difference to how quickly students can absorb the information and get the riff under their fingers.

The rests in between are meant to allow the brain a chance to absorb the material.

Learn to practice to see results and feel great

7 Main Areas of Focus

Theory

Each lesson starts with a bit of theory.  From learning about the 12 tones used in music and how they are laid out on the fretboard to chord substitution in a song, we will cover quite a bit of material.  You will be able to call yourself not only a guitar player but a musician.  Some things covered:

  •  12 tones
  • Fretboard
  • Intervals
  • Ear Training

Scales

Scales are probably the single most important element in music.  We build chords from scales, keys are determined from scales, melodies are made from scales, we use scales to solo and improvise.

There are 5 scale forms that will cover the fretboard.  We will learn the 5 over the 24 main lessons.  Once we learn one, we will use that same form but in different keys to let it get under your fingers.  Once we are comfortable with that form we will learn the next.  The course will teach you:

  •  5 major/minor scale forms
  • All 12 major and minor scales
  • Plus all 12 Melodic Minor and Harmonic Minor Scales
  • The most commonly used modes
  • Some not so commonly used modes
  • Scale Patterns
  • How to use scales both in writing and improvising

Arpeggios

Arpeggios are broken chords and a great way to improve your technique, train your ear and learn your fretboard.  I personally find arpeggios very fun to play, specially over a jam track and you will find lots of jam tracks in the members section to practice everything you learn.

Chords

Very careful consideration was made to the order the chords are introduced and as each lesson progresses you will continue to use the chords you learned.  And of course what fun is learning chords without learning songs.  So as chords are introduced, songs that use those chords are part of the lesson.

The Beginner Module (Lessons 1-8) has you learning all of your open chords and power chords.  The Intermediate Module (Lessons 9-16) has you learn your bar chords and 4 forms that will allow you to play 48 chords.  The Advanced Module (Lessons 17-24) has you getting into 7th, 9th and 13th chords, spread voicing and inversions of many chords.

Strumming and Rhythm

The strumming lessons work much like the chords and have each lesson expanding slightly on the previous lesson to make sure the material gets ingrained.  And again with the play along jam tracks you are guaranteed to succeed.

Rhythm playing and strumming has to be one of the most important elements to any instrument.  We have to be able to play in time for things to sound right.  And to be able to play with others.

If there was one area that students had the most problem with, it is strumming and rhythm playing.

Improvising

To me this is one of the most fun parts to playing an instrument.  Making stuff up 🙂

This has got to be one of the most effective ways to practice scales, arpeggios, rhythm, chord shapes and finger exercises.  Playing along with a jam track is much more fun then a metronome but gets the same results as far as working on playing in time.

Songs

And of course the core of the method.  Songs.  Lots and lots of songs and cool riffs.  The reason I sometimes just teach riffs is that the song is quite repetive

Your Instructor (Me)

Well, my name is Teague and I have been a professional musician for 25 years.  In that time I have done a lot of things from guitar in a Metallica tribute band to cello in the CSU orchestra 🙂

I studied music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Humber College in Toronto and Cleveland State University in Cleveland.  I studied guitar performance, composition and music education.  I minored in piano and paid for a good part of my education on a cello scholarship.

I have toured across North America and played 1000's of shows since I started playing.  From jazz to metal, classical to pop, I have played every style of music.

I have taught almost as long as I have played.  I was even teaching beginner students when I was in High School with only a few years of playing experience myself.  I started Musiclearning.Com in 1999 as a way to help students that I saw in person each week with material they could reference at home between lessons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: "I am a complete beginner, will this site work for me?"

Yes. The site starts from scratch with learning your strings and how to hold a pick and moves quickly to playing songs and soloing like a pro 🙂

Q: "I have played for years, will this site help me?"

I have made lessons on the site for every level including lessons I put up to help myself with things I am currently working on. If you feel the site does not have enough information for you, I will gladly refund your money and no questions asked.

Q: "With so many free lessons online, why would I pay for lessons?"

It is true there are plenty of free guitar lessons online and some are very good, however if you really want to move forward you need more than just random lessons.   You need a method that provides direction and focus to help you really move forward and feel great about your playing.  To get the results that make you want to pick up your guitar every day, log in and learn more! The members section is a complete online method designed to take you step by step to reach your guitar goals.

Q: "Are there any tabs on the site?"

No, there are no tabs. When I play the 5th fret of my D string I want to know that is a G. Not just the 5th fret of my D string, or 4th string if I don't know my string names. Or 3rd string if I have learned my strings upside down 🙂

Q: "Do I need to have a PayPal account?"

No. You will go through the PayPal page but you can use your Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover or E-Check.
