Reading Lesson 1

The reading exercises progress quickly and it is essential you read a little every day.
These exercises are to accompany Lesson 1
The staff consists of 5 lines and 4 spaces: Staff = five lines. Notes can be placed on the lines or in the spaces between the lines.
A clef determines where the 7 alpabet letters are placed on the staff.
Guitar music is written with a Treble Clef,
also known as a G Clef.
The Treble Clef also known as the G Clef
Named the G clef because it looks
like the letter G and loops
around the note G.
Treble Clef or G Clef
The large C is the time signature
and stands for Common time ( 4/4 )
Treble Clef and Time Signature. Common time. Could be written as 4/4
Like the white keys on the piano the notes just repeat the first 7 alphabet letters over and over. Space, line, space, line. We call this moving in steps. Notice all the notes are either a half step or whole step apart.

Some words to help us remember the notes. Do not be embarassed to use these. It works. You will only need to say them for so long.

Treble Clef Spaces

Face, notes on the spaces.
Treble Clef Lines
Every good boy does fine. The notes on the lines.
Take a moment now to visit the Rhythm room(from the non-members section) to get started with note values. Listen to the examples and return here.

Exercise #1

Using our high open E string (Eddie), try playing along with the midi files using half notes and whole notes. The time signature is C (common time) so our whole note will be worth 4 beats or counts and the half note will be worth 2.

Daily Practice Routine
It is very important to develop good practice habits. Set reasonable goals. Aim to do 10-15 minutes a day for now. Recommended:
2-5 minutes on alternate picking on your open strings.(Be sure to say the names of your strings)
3-5 minutes on fingergymnastics. (Always work to keep your fingers as close to the fretboard as possible)
1-2 minutes on the reading exercises from above.

When you are ready to move to the next lesson use the link below. We will do the Reading exercises to accompany lesson 2 first before the actual lesson itself. If we don't do the reading first it becomes easy to skip the reading.
