Lesson 6

In this lesson we will cover:

  • Scales - D Major in 2nd
  • Chords - D, Dsus4, Asus4
  • Arpeggios - D Major in 2nd
  • Rhythm/Strumming - Cont. from Lesson 5
  • Improvising/Jam Tracks - Key of D Major/B Minor
  • Riffs/Songs - Free Falling

Theory: Key Signatures

The key signature is between the Treble Clef and the Time Signature and will contain either sharps of flats if any key other than the key of C.

And this Theory Lesson should go after the Scale Lesson.

When we built a D major scale we learned that it had two sharps.  F# and C#.  So if we were playing  in the Key of D major all F and C's will be played as sharps.  So instead of having to write the sharp accidental (#) in front of every F and C we can put them in the Key Signature.

This makes the notation easier to read.  It will be much more noticeable when we are looking at keys with more and more accidentals.

Scales

D Major in 2nd Position

D Major in 2nd Position

This may look like an entirely new form however it is really your open C form from Scale Lesson 2.  However it does feel quite different because there are no open strings.

This means we are using different fingers.  In other words the first note of the C scale in open (also known as 1st position) started with our 3rd (ring) finger.  The first note of the D scale will start with our little (pinky) finger.

Chords

Open D, Dsus4 and Asus4

D Chord

I still need to move all the material from old lesson 6

That will include:

  • Diatonic Triads in the Key of D
  • Building a D Major Chord
  • Building an A Major Chord
  • Looking at what a Sus4 Chord is

Arpeggios

Arpeggio - D Major in 2nd Position

Technique

This was in the old Lesson 6.  Not sure what my plan is here.  Does it get a technique section or is it included in the arpeggio section above?  After I finish arpeggio section it may be easier to decide.
