These exercises are a bit challenging. If you haven't done much reading visit the Reading section.

A blues scale is a minor pentatonic scale with an added lowered 5th degree. ( 1, b3, 4, b5, 5, b7 )

Deciding what position to read in depends greatly on the highest and lowest notes to be played. If we can use one position that is best. Sometimes we will have no choice but to shift.

Ex. 1
Play exercise 1 with your 12th position E blues scale. The give away here is that there is a high G which could only be played on the 15th fret of the high E string.

Please note that the fretboard shown is an E minor/G major pentatonic scale. You need to add Bb for it to be a blues scale.

The phrasing doesn't leave many places to play this exercise other than on our high E string. Watch the fingering close this is a tough one. Pay extra attention to the fingering in the last measure. These fingering abilites are needed in order to move up the neck quickly.
